Improving Chicken Health with ONT’s Chlorella Feed Supplement

August 12, 2024

ONT Holdings is advancing poultry nutrition with a Chlorella vulgaris-based feed supplement. This innovative product aims to enhance chicken health and productivity, providing a natural alternative to synthetic additives and supporting sustainable practices in the poultry industry.

The problem

In modern poultry farming, there is a growing demand for feed supplements that are both sustainable and nutritionally enriched to enhance chicken health and performance. Traditional feeds often fail to deliver essential nutrients and may rely on non-renewable resources, leading to environmental and economic concerns. Additionally, improving egg quality, including attributes such as color and nutritional value, is crucial for poultry producers aiming to meet consumer expectations and boost market competitiveness. The need for innovative solutions that address these challenges while supporting sustainable agricultural practices is increasingly urgent.

The solution

ONT Holdings, a Langley-based start-up specializing in innovative agricultural solutions, is addressing these challenges with an innovative chicken feed supplement developed from Chlorella vulgaris, a microalgae renowned for its high nutritional value. In 2023, with support from BCCAI, ONT Holdings embarked on this project to conduct feeding trials with broiler and layer chickens, ensuring the Chlorella supplement supports the animals' growth, health, and performance.

The project aims to achieve several key outcomes. ONT Holdings seeks to establish a sustainable production method for Chlorella vulgaris using their advanced bioreactor technology, ensuring a reliable and eco-friendly supply of the microalgae. The supplement is designed to significantly enhance the nutritional profile of chicken feed, providing essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that promote poultry health and improve egg quality, including aspects like color and nutritional value.

Once approved and registered with Health Canada as a new feed option for chickens, the new chicken feed will expand ONT Holdings' product line.

The project also involves collaboration with key partners, including Canadian Poultry Consultant, Intertek Ltd, Natural Products Consulting Corp, and Richie-Smith Feeds. These partnerships contribute to comprehensive testing and validation, ensuring the supplement’s effectiveness and commercial viability.

The Chlorella vulgaris feed supplement will impact the poultry industry by offering a cost-effective, natural alternative to synthetic additives, enhancing poultry health and productivity. Preliminary feedback has been positive, highlighting improvements in the nutritional quality and appearance of chicken eggs and overall poultry health.
