Narrative Film: Saving Miss Sue (2014)
Final Film Video
Overview
This 7-minute short narrative video was generated from the life story of a woman, taking the idea of an imaginary character from the romance comedy. I have Coconut as a hallucination of Sue. Also I want to create a more detailed and clearer storyline that could illustrate the entire story in an easier understanding way.
Indoor Scenes
Indoors scenes are tending to have poor light source and thus it may make our film turn out to be with a very dark and poor quality. So I borrowed a very Bing ambient lighting kit and a couple of small lighting kits to fix the problem. The shadows of objects and people somehow show up on the wall because of the light source, but it doesn't matter so much. I have moved one scene when Sue’s car accident trauma has occurred again after she has got better for a while and Coconut appeared and tried to encourage her, from outside in the park to inside of Sue’s bedroom. This also leaks more hint to the audience that coconut is the hallucination of Sue’s, which makes the movie more mysterious. Another challenge for indoor filming is the lighting. I have borrowed 1000w and 600w lights from the school library. I attached filters on to the light to simulate daylight lighting.
Outdoor Scenes
For it is the early spring of Vancouver, there was more rainy weather than I expected. Not only does the rainy weather have limited our chances to film outside, but also created more challenges requiring in lighting when I film indoor. As mentioned above, I used the first person perspective face-to-face shot in our rehearsal and hoped it's going to have a nice result. I actualized our idea of this shot, which turned out to be very good. So as I learned from this result, I know that thinking ahead before actually devoting into real filming process is a very good idea to save tons of time.
More outdoor scenes were carried out during the same shooting day, most of which were playing scenes of Sue and Coconut. As mentioned above, playing scene aimed to tell the audience how they met each other and how their friendship improved. We set up two cameras and recorded at the same time. I set these two cameras with the same exposure and other settings, which can be efficient to save time. Afterwards, I edited the video files and made video transitions from two cameras.
