MacCulloch, Reformation, 3-52
I presume that we will begin our discussion at p. 26.
Identify: canon law, diocese, parish, Landeskirchen, Great Schism, conciliarism, heresy, Wyclif, Lollards, Hus, Utraquists, Waldensians. You should know what these terms mean and how they are important for the chapter.
1. What cracks threatened the pillar of the papacy?
2. Why did Church and commonwealth come into conflict? What were the social dimensions of these conflicts? How were some of these conflicts settled?
3. A corrupt papacy is one reason that has often been advanced for the beginning of the Reformation. Do you think MacCulloch agrees with this view?
