Leslie Elliott Armijo, Associate Professor of International Studies, discuss her new book, "The BRICS and Collective Financial Statecraft"

The Office of Research Services has received the following information which we are forwarding to our e-mail list members:

You are cordially invited to hear Leslie Elliott Armijo, Associate Professor of International Studies, discuss her new book, "The BRICS and Collective Financial Statecraft," Thursday, January 18, 6:30 pm, HC 7000. For details, please visit: www.sfu.ca/davidlamcentre/events/BRICS-Collective-Financial-Statecraft.html

The book analyzes the initial decade of the exclusive multilateral club of large emerging powers: the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). Coauthored by a Russia specialist (Roberts), an East Asia/China scholar (Katada), and a Brazilianist with a longtime comparative interest in India (Armijo), the work documents the BRICS' push for "inside reforms" to gain greater influence within global financial governance institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, as well as the group's decision to pursue "outside options" also, by establishing new institutions controlled by themselves (such as the New Development Bank).

On-going tensions within the club include differences between the two autocracies (China, Russia) and three democracies (India, Brazil, South Africa), and the ambiguous relations between China, the dominant yet not hegemonic player, and the remaining four.

Eric Werker of the Beedie School and Yves Tiberghien of UBC's Political Science Department and China Council will provide commentary.
