Genome Canada has launched a new competition which may be of interest to you: the 2017 Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (B/CB) Competition (BCB2017). This program aims to support the development of next generation Bioinformatics and Computational Biology tools and methodologies that will be required to deal with the large amounts of data produced by modern genomics technologies, analyze and integrate complex data sets and better understand the associated biology, and to provide broad and timely access of these Bioinformatics and Computational Biology tools to the research community.
The Competition will support proposals under two streams:
· Stream 1: proposals mainly impacting the human health sector
· Stream 2: proposals mainly impacting one or more of the other sectors, i.e., agriculture, aquaculture/fisheries, forestry, energy, mining and/or environment
There is $12 million available in funding for this competition, to be split approximately equally between the two streams. A maximum Genome Canada investment of $500,000 is available for individual projects and must be matched by co-funding through other sources. Successful projects will be awarded funding for a term of up to three years. BC-based applicants are required to apply to this competition through Genome BC. The application process will be comprised of two steps: Registration and Full Application.
These projects require that 50% of the eligible project costs are covered by co-funding from other sources. For BCB2017 projects led by a BC-based project leader, Genome BC is committed to providing co-funding up to 25% of the total project budget, not to exceed $250,000, if the project is approved for funding by Genome Canada. The co-funding provided by Genome BC will be restricted to expenditures incurred in the Province of British Columbia. Please note that Genome BC co-funding is conditional upon approval of the final project and budget by Genome Canada, availability of funds and approval by Genome BC’s Board of Directors.
To ensure that potential projects are eligible for this competition, interested applicants are encouraged to contact Genome BC as soon as possible. The deadline for the submission of draft registration forms to Genome BC is January 16, 2018 to allow for time to discuss potential projects; there is room to extend that date if needed.
