SFU WCPA 2006
Info for Speakers, Commentators, and Chairs
Thank you all for
participating!
Chairs:
Please read the info below, and ensure that the sessions start and end on time. (Give
the speaker a five-minute warning, then a one-minute warning, and the
commentator a two-minute warning, then a 30-second warning. Call time if you must!) You should facilitate the asking of
questions, making a note of people in the order in which they raise their
hands, and not letting any one exchange go on for too long. It is customary, but not strictly mandatory,
for the speaker not to have an
opportunity to respond to the commentator until after questions from the
audience have been taken.
Speakers and Commentators: There will be
overhead projectors in each room. You
should already have heard if there is a DPU in your room. (If you are using a DPU, please bring your own
laptop or make arrangements, as computers will not be supplied. Also, bring back-up transparencies; bulbs burn out, systems can be
incompatible, etc..)
Although the conference is being held at SFU, the setting is not the
normal academic one (because it is at the downtown campus), so please try to
bring enough photocopies, etc., with you.
It may be difficult to print or to make photocopies on site.
Speakers:
Keep your presentation under the 30-minute
time limit. If you have revised your
paper at all, get the new copy to your commentator in a timely manner. (Consult with him/her as to what ‘timely’
means.) If and when you receive the
comments in advance, you are not to change your paper to avoid or deflect
criticism. If you are talking, as
opposed to reading, your paper, be sure to include the parts relevant to what
the commentator has chosen to focus upon.
Commentators:
Limit your remarks to between 5 and 10
minutes. Try to send the speaker
your comments a couple of days before the conference, keeping in mind travel
time for some speakers.
Chairs, Speakers, and Commentators: Have fun!
