We use the external GAL, but we're still on 5.x. In general, the web autocomplete worked fine (and, as others have commented, has a built-in delay of about 0.5 seconds before submitting a GAL query, and the query only requests 20 entries back, so it never hits the LDAP server very hard. Where we had problems was with the Outlook and Blackberry Gal Sync, which attempts to suck down the entire directory with a single query (for us, this was 50,000 entries) and would sometimes time out when the query took a minute just to send all of that data.

Thanks for the heads up - we'll be starting our 6.0 testing in the next couple of weeks and will have to pay special attention to GAL issues.
