Dear Dr. Schoen:
Thank you for your letter of October 30, with which you enclosed a letter signed by over 150 of Canada's leading university and government conservation biologists, regarding the proposed federal endangered species legislation.
This strong expression of interest in endangered species conservation by the academic community is indeed heartening. I am very concerned about endangered species and believe that stronger legislation is necessary to ensure their effective protection. You will be pleased to know that I intend to introduce legislation in the House of Commons in the spring. Rest assured that your comments will be taken into consideration.
The responsibility for protecting endangered species is shared among the federal, provincial and territorial governments. The release of The Canadian Endangered Species Protection Act: A Legislative Proposal ensures that the federal government is doing its part and working co-operatively with provinces and territories to develop their own legislative tools in this area. I am confident that the federal, provincial and territorial governments will be able to reach an agreement on a common national approach in the near future.
The interest of Canadian scientists in this important initiative is greatly appreciated. I look forward to working with all Canadians to make our country a better and safer place for all species.
Yours sincerely,
Sheila Copps
