REEL 98 COMMENTARY

1. Opens with a conversation with the custodian about the bells, and church history, some special occasions when the bells of Holy Rosary have been rung. Bells are ringing in background throughout.

4'00" conversation continues, but custodian is off microphones, indistinct.

2. The cues in this take are part of the "8-splice" aspect of the ring: here, different changes or styles of changes are rung, each named by the city or region from which the style originates. Notice the continuous rumbling, presumably coming from the swinging action of the bells. Opens with talk with the custodian.

*3'45" walking up the stairs to Belfry Tower.

5'30" arrive at top -- microphones are just under a trap door leading to the Belfry area where the ringers are. Creaking is from the ringers' feet, above the microphones. Bells are at a distance now.

7'15" Cue: "Hup!"

9'25" Cue: "Hup! London!"

*11'45" Cue: "Hup! Superlative!"

12'55" change microphone position, peering through a small hole in the floor.

13'00" Cue: "Hup! London!"

15'20" Cue: "Hup! Bristol!"

15'45" begin to leave, custodian points out the commemorative plaque which can be seen through the small hole in the floor.

16'30" Cue: "Hup! Yorkshire!"

17'00" recordist reads plaque (tape delay causes reading and pronunciation problems).

17'40" another cue. Walking back downstairs, talking. Good transition to outside, loud traffic and bells.

Continued on reel 99.
