REEL 85 COMMENTARY

During the recording of these sounds you hear a light patter of feet from the store above. At the time they were an intrusive sound to the recordists, however there are some interesting patterns here. They are at least alive compared to the countless dead sounds which are the subject of this session. Some of these "disappearing sounds" have some real and distinctive qualities. Others, because they are operated "empty" (such as butter churns) are just that. These are sounds which have been gathering dust for years. In the case of the old car horns, it is the sound of the man naming them which holds interest as much as the sounds themselves which appear in no real social context.
