REEL 74 COMMENTARY

1. A frog and a mysterious pinging sound, from somewhere in the bush. Beautiful, but what is it? Traffic and urban ambience in background.

2. A Chinese family (2 men, 1 boy, 2 girls) playing field hockey together. They seemed to be taking no notice at all of the recording equipment. Traffic ambience in background throughout.

3. Fast moving traffic. Very violent snarl of vehicles, flying past at close range.

0'32" very strong engine peak (muscle car or truck gearing down).

1'40" "Hello there" from passing car.

4. Walking inside, good transition.

1'50" end of musical tune in progress as recordist enters.

2'10" another tune begins, a group of children cluster around the microphones.

No single skating sounds audible. Very reverberant indoor ambience.

5. Kids talking around microphones, music in background.

6. More kids around microphones. "Did you hear the squirrels in the park?"

7. The last few minutes of the skating period. Preparation for re-icing, loud scraping sounds. Pop '2001' arrangement closes free skating time.

*5'10" p.a. announcement, followed by very loud ice clearing machine immediately after. Note how machine's noise gets amplified by the reverberant space.

7'25" low hum of motor at close range.

7'40" operator stops to ask the sound level.

8. Ice machine, new recording levels.
