REEL 58 COMMENTARY
1. Note ambient features of reverberation, music, intermittent fountain. Very few distinct voices. Many stores have a distinct ambience of their own, often very different from that of the mall. Take begins with entering food floor, buggies banging.
2'00" department store.
*2'20" candy counter, weighing and nice sounds of filling up bag with candy.
3'00" recordist buys jelly beans, saleswoman reacts, asks questions.
*4'30" toy area.
5'00" pet shop, birds in cage.
*6'55" transition to mall, "lovely" sounds of moozak, real string stuff.
8'40" record shop, reggae music.
9'30" leaving shop.
9'50" bookshop, very quiet.
10'20" approach air vent.
10'50" pages turning.
*11'10" cassette blurb for encyclopedia "automated learning courses".
11'40" exit to mall and moozak, fountain.
12'45" enter appliance store, independent moozak and low frequency sound from heating blower.
13'50" clear male voice.
14'50" mall fountain again.
15'00" enter clothing store, very distinct change of ambience, independent moozak.
15'30" back to mall (reverb, mall moozak, fountain).
16'15" enter Birk's jewellery, a quiet muted space.
2. Take opens in restaurant, cups clattering, voices, hum, moozak.
3. Take opens in the kitchen.
0'35" cash register.
1'05" cash register, close-up.
1'30" remark about shooting somebody, re: microphones.
1'35" leave restaurant.
3'25" cash register and wrapping sounds.
4'40" outside, wind noises and comment about microphones.
5'15" bottles being loaded.
*5'30" conveyor rollers.
6'35" sudden level change, conveyor machinery distorted.
4. Rather an indistinct sequence, containing however some interesting sounds within it. General ambience contains a lot of air conditioning sound and water sounds (see reel 59 for another attempt).
0'05" exotic bird -- continues intermittently.
1'00" walking over bamboo bridge, to waterwheel (not very distinct).
3'00" parrot squawk.
3'40" waterwheel, lopsided plopping more distinct.
4'40" earth falls out of plant pot during repotting.
