REEL 42 COMMENTARY
1. A complete sequence of lighting a fire, start to finish. Recordists "finished" the take by walking out of the cabin towards the lake -- the result is a fine artifact, but lack of human presence. Opens with recordists walking down path to cabin, nice footsteps on pebbles.
1'00" starting to light woodstove.
2'05" ripping up cardboard.
3'05" splitting kindling.
5'30" fire is underway.
6'45" lid of stove put on.
6'55" adjustment to airflow takes out roar sound of fire.
7'30" airflow rumble comes back.
11'00" leaving the cabin, walking towards the lake on gravel/dirt path.
*12'50" jet appears, footsteps stop
14'15" throwing rocks into water, "kersploosh", nice and clear.
2. Several versions of this, a vertical metal bar, struck with a wooden board. Recorded outside. Rain and bird ambience.
0'25" chainsaw at a distance, lots of rumble and crackle.
0'50" dinner gong,
1'50" truck passing, quite a powerful acoustic event in this landscape.
3'24" chainsaw again.
3. Dog playing with a stick. The rhythm of this activity is somewhat obscure unless this is known. Mostly rain, the occasional bird, very nice, quiet ambience.
0'43" door squeak and dog playing with stick on wooden floor of cabin.
1'21" car passing.
1'55" car passing.
2'19" truck passing.
2'44" more cars.
4. Dog, rain, distant truck appearing slowly, passing and fading away in the distance over long period of time. Interesting sequence.
2'07" dog yowls.
2'45" truck passes by with tremendous noise, after that sudden quietness.
3'15" truck again audible, further away.
6'00" truck still faintly audible in distance.
6'40" voices from lodge audible.
7'00" quiet at last, truck has disappeared.
7'45" enter breakfast room through sliding door, wooden ambience, questions from students about equipment. Very quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Disturbance on left channel.
