REEL 39 COMMENTARY

1. Opens with recordist buying ticket to ferry, bus idling in background -- a very typical sound on ferry parking lots!

2. Boarding ferry by car, interesting crescendos.

0'30" strong clanging noises, increase of low frequency vibration, big reverb, good sequence.

3. Heavy broadband rumbling ambience. Banging from other cars entering ferry.

4. on deck, waiting for departure and ferry whistle, some heavy wind on microphones, crows, seagulls in background. Mostly broadband engine noise underlying sequence. Not that interesting.

*1'30" horn, three sharp blasts, powerful with reverb.

1'45" p.a. announcement, announcing departure.

6'15" entering indoor area. Heavy wind on microphones. Crossing to other deckside of ferry, seagulls.

7'30" approaching rail, seawash from below audible.

8'25" stepping back from rail.

5. Contains a number of exchanges between mate and steersman on the bridge, and talk to recordists about the purpose of recording, strong ambience of navigation and communication equipment. Good sequence. Take starts outside of bridge waiting for permission to record.

1'10" being greeted by staff, then explanation of noisy gyroscope and talk of noise. Gyroscope has a very high frequency that is heard throughout take.

3'15" mate gives compass reading to man at wheel

3'45" two-way radio voice, intermittent.

3'50" compass reading, steering correction from mate.

5'00" mate telephones to engine room for telegraph test.

6'10" telegraph noise: signals to and from engine room.

6'45" mate explains recordists to engineer.

8'00" p.a. voice from outside.

8'30" message from bridge over p.a.

6. Good crescendo, very heavy low frequency rumble.

1'10" p.a. voice, sounds unreal in this noise.

7. Very noisy.

8. Lower levels.

9. Better levels, very noisy (112-116 dBA!). Clicking sound is from piston valves, creates good rhythms with multi-channel effect.

1'00" focusing in on valves, note also a very high frequency sound.

10. Beginning of conversation with engineers in control room about hearing loss.

Continued on reel 40.
