REEL 33 COMMENTARY

Takes 1-6 in False Creek, of which 2 and 6 contain interesting horn sounds. Takes 7 and 8 were made in Chinatown.

1. Freight train passing slowly with bell ringing throughout. Distortions.

2. Same as above, better.

1'20" whistle in distance -- staccato, relaxed, minor chord with echo, beautiful.

3/4. Broadband sound with saw screeching and intermittent banging and interesting pitches from saw.

5. Wind noise, sawmill ambience in distance, traffic passes by in foreground, wet pavement, not that interesting and some swearing from recordists.

6. Waiting for B.C. Hydro horn which blows at *2'30", muted by passing traffic and distant mill ambience.

7. Opens in the kitchen. Recordist standing next to a large wok where several things were getting cooked together. Loud ventilator noise above stove.

4'30" walking to different points in the kitchen.

5'30" leaving kitchen into dining area.

5'50" cashier making change.

8. Recordist walks from one Chinese store to another (4 stores on this take, several more on reel 34). Note the distinctive ambience in each shop; conversation, wrapping sounds, meat chopping, cash registers. Traffic ambience between each store. Take begins in butcher shop, phone ringing and chopping sounds.

2'10" leaving butcher shop.

2'30" entering Wing Huy Co.

4'20" leaving Wing Huy Co.

4'35" entering Wah Loong Ltd.

5'10" car horn exchange audible from inside.

5'25" leaving Wah Loong Ltd.

5'35" entering Majestic BBQ.

6'08" leaving Majestic BBQ.

6'20" entering Dollar Meat store.

7'15" question about recording.

Continued on reel 34.
