REEL 28 COMMENTARY
1. Recordist moving continuously through the store and then the library. This produces an interesting variety of different ambiences, and is particularly effective at points of transition between spaces. However, the continual movement of the recordist at other times can cause loss of focus, i.e., it is hard for the listener to follow this movement. Take starts on street with heavy traffic.
0'15" walking into Duthie's Bookstore, note ventilation hum.
1'30" "do we sound okay?"
*3'00" strong hum.
3'30" walking outside to street.
*4'50" enter Vancouver Public Library, good transition.
5'25" static interference.
7'10" enter elevator, loud, beating hum, exit to second floor.
*8'25" loud hum.
8'45" enter men's room.
10'00" toilet flush.
10'05" exit.
10'30" loud hum, then voices.
11'40" reverberant stairwell, walking down to ground floor.
12'30" quick change of ambience, absorbent with hum.
13'20" by check-out counter.
2. Ambient, loud brutal traffic noise outside the library, waiting for the noon horn (B.C. Hydro). Take begins inside library at check-out counter.
0'25" exit to street.
0'55" in traffic: motorcycle and police radio voice. Ambient traffic to end.
7'00"-7'30" loud trucks.
8'05" B.C. Hydro horn.
3. Interesting ambient textures and changes in the hotel. Good variety of acoustic spaces. Take starts outside Duthie's Bookstore.
1'00" walking down alley to the Hotel Vancouver.
2'15" entering hotel, bad disturbances on microphones before and while entering.
3'00" "Hello, hello", to microphones.
3'45" elevator bell, enter elevator -- sudden change to quiet, absorbent ambience. Ride to top floor with several stops on the way.
5'40" opening a window shade.
7'10" sudden ambience change, walking along corridor.
7'30" into bare hall, window open to city, recording city ambience from 14th floor.
