REEL 106 COMMENTARY

1. Mostly conversational (the guide's name is Alex Matches). Opens with trucks and sirens disappearing from the hall, then introductions and a tour of vehicles, trying to get an old siren to work.

5'00" garage door clattering up.

*8'05" cranking and starting the 1912 La France truck, amazing noise in reverberant space.

8'40" kids attack microphones.

8'40" "Why are you recording firetrucks?"

10'20" kid imitates fire siren, good imitation.

*12'10" siren in idling position.

2. Outside.

0'45" truck passes by, siren wailing.

1'55" recordist gets ride on the truck.

2'55" siren wails.

3. More conversation, more kids. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere, all the qualities of a visit to the firehall.

0'05" klaxon of 1926 engine.

0'15" kid realizes he's been recorded.

4. Kid imitates siren.

0'40" new siren (1967 International Harvester rig).

1'25" sampling p.a. system, gets feedback, produces an amazing sound, almost like ring modulation.

1'45" kid imitates siren.

2'20" p.a. sample.

2'40" talking about new sirens.

5. Lots of truck motor idling, good, at the sales yard of Inland Kenworth Ltd.

2'20" p.a. call for "Joe".

2'40" undernourished air horns, pretty funny!

6. See commentary on reel 107.
