REEL 100 COMMENTARY

1. Clear neighbourhood sounds, hi-fi soundscape. Walking out of house to bus stop, nice transition.

0'45" clack of gate.

1'20" rhythmic burst of bus air brakes.

2'00" chimes

2'05" outside pool hall, billiard noises.

2'45" clear footsteps, 2 or 3 pairs.

2. Typically quiet ride on a trolley bus. Recordist boards bus, asks where to put money. Generally quiet ambience before bus starts, some voices, outside traffic, slight hum from heater or air conditioner.

*2'45" after a long wait the bus starts up.

3. Driver calls out "Pender Street" stop, recordist leaves bus, neon sign buzz.

4. Traffic moving by fast.

*5. Very loud ride on a diesel bus. Most conversation is masked, even that between the recordist and fellow passenger. Nevertheless, there is lots of conversation, mostly women and children.

1'20" driver gets impatient with over enthusiastic bell ringer.

2'20" question to recordist.

5'20" driver calls Carrall Street stop, quieter during stops.

5'30"-end party game noise maker in background.

5'50" recordist leaves bus, incomplete.

6. Lively street songs, with yelps and country whooping.

0'10" music from Chinese grocery store.

0'35" first drink.

0'45" more audible, different radio music.

1'30" bum panhandles recordist, Kentucky Fried Chicken ad in background.

2'00" question from child about tape recorder, answered by adult.

2'10" street musicians (guitar, tambourine), from blues to spiritual to R & B, to rockabilly to folk.

4'40" donations requested.

7. More singing.

8. Same from across the street, different acoustic perspective, voices, some traffic.

9. Quiet street ambience. Drug dealer asking recordist if he wants to score, followed by drunk trying to figure out what it means to score, followed by drunk talking to child. All takes place off microphones a bit.

1'55" Hello to microphones.

2'05" roachclip salesman invites recordist to record his pitch, rambling dialogue with two or three other people, including a wise old drunk at end, who has a great laugh.
