REEL 86 COMMENTARY

1. Same as last take on previous reel.

2. Recorded from outside. Kids are playing in a church gym. This is a very reverberating space, as a result noisy voices. Piano doodles in background. Lots of running around and restlessness, some radio in background. Recordist walking away, footsteps in snow, one or two birds. Note the quietness.

3. Asking a woman, followed by snowshovelling noises as she gets back to work. Traffic ambience in background prevents hearing the shoveling clearly.

4. Starts with train throb. Change of levels (0'35"). This is a CP freight train coming from Banff, heading west. It has a major tuned whistle, and still it sounds mournful. Blows for long time (0'46"-1'15"). Beautiful. The recordists' car engine (1970 Pontiac Station Wagon) is running throughout. Nice rhythm clicking from the bell motor on the crossing signal. Accelerating and changing rhythmic patterns of the freight cars passing by as train speeds up. Then suddenly the sound disappears (3'02").

5. Family of Longhorn Sheep on the Trans-Canada Highway. One sheep was baaing at the top of a cliff above the highway, calling to one or two others down at road level (0'20"). Pretty funny, hoarse "baa". Large truck passes at high speed (1'20"). Great. Followed by several cars.

6. Begins with footsteps, car passing. Family excited about sheep. Faint sheep "baa" audible during short stretch of silence. Not great, boring.

7. Very silent. Nice phasing effects when car passes at high speed toward beginning of take. Otherwise uneventful.

8. Lots of static and distant radio stations.

9. A shallow stream running off the hillside to the highway down the shoulder. Fast moving water with mostly high frequency content. Some gurgles. Car passing at high speed (0'30" and toward end of take).

10. A group of female elk browsing by the roadside. Munching noises clear at beginning, then cars approaching and passing at high speed. Note the long approach time of first car. Never gets as quiet as beginning again.

11. Arriving, turning off car motor. Recorded from car. Bad wind at beginning, starts with trunk coming and passing (0'10"-0'30"). Traffic masks eating sounds, but munching noises become clearer (5'30"). Car door opens, buzzing noise scolds (7'10"). This commotion was caused by recordist going to ask motorist/onlooker to turn off car engine. Squeaking sounds from hungry young elk (8'00"). Acoustically these animals are hardly present on both takes (10/11), therefore meaningless recordings as far as "wildlife" is concerned. However, takes are great of single cars passing in stillness!
