REEL 70 COMMENTARY

1. A long pleasant "minimal" sequence.Recorded from the car. This is a very quiet country road. A man is putting logs into a pickup truck in the background. In foreground a small fire is crackling delicately alongside road. A vehicle passes by (1'50"), wind in distance begins to build (8'20"), and down (9'00"), fire pops (9'30", 9'45"), truck starts (12'20"), another passes by and truck leaves (12'45"), jet appears suddenly (13'20"), and disappears (15'15"), wind comes up and fire is still going.

2. A "bright" sounding, fast moving river. Recorded from car, but close enough to hear the deeper swirls and gurgles also.

3. Early evening, extremely quiet ambience, car passing (0'46"), some distant traffic faintly audible, footsteps (1'45"), faint voices, no bell yet.

4. One bell (10"-40"), high and clear, all overtones audible in this clear ambience, beautiful decays.

5. Same (10"-40"), squeaking of mechanism audible behind bell. Note the incredible silence after ring is over.

6. Weary recordists welcome the change to talk afterwards. Conversation ranges from church and bell to life in Eau Claire, the Soundscape Project, ski-doos and fire trucks.

*Beginning here, the recordists take more and more material on the fly -usually things that would be seen from the roadside -- as they begin a rather rushed drive back to Vancouver.
