VIBRATION

As demonstrated
with sine tones in the Equal-Loudness example, our
hearing sensitivity to low frequency bass sounds falls
off at lower loudness levels, as do some of the very
high frequencies, but it's likely you noticed the change
in the loudness of the bass most clearly. So is that why
the bass is usually emphasized in pop music? This lack of sensitivity to low frequency sounds might seem strange since we so often experience high energy low frequency sounds in our environment, but keep in mind a lot of their effects are felt in the body, and less so in the ears. To compensate for our lack of sensitivity to low frequency sounds at softer listening levels, some amplifiers have a "loudness" knob to emphasize them – but we should emphasize that this intended for low listening levels only! |
