PHIL 150 History of Philosophy I

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an introduction to the history of philosophy from the 5th century BC to the 13th century. Philosophers and groups of philosophers to be examined include: the Pre-socratics, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Anselm, and St. Thomas Aquinas (there may be others).

Topics and questions to be explored include the nature of humans, the nature of justice and morality, appearance versus reality, what is knowledge? is there a supreme being, and if so, what is the nature of that being?

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  • 2-hour mid term – 30%
  • 6 page essay – 20%
  • 2-hour final exam – 40%
  • participation –10%

NOTE: PHIL 150 has no prerequisites and may be applied towards the Certificate of Liberal Arts and the Breadth/Humanities requirement.
