"Methinks that 'reverser' is a British term. That is the first term I heard for it. I never knew any Chicago fans when I lived there so I never picked up any terminology." (RCD)
'Reverser' is the only term that I have ever read or heard to describe reversing 'wye' overhead layouts in Britain.
The majority of British terminus / turnaround layouts were loops. Reversers were used where for some reason, loops were not practicable. British trolleybuses generally carried a conductor who could provide the safety look out function.
If this does not sound daft, London had quite a number of unwired reversers! These were at authorised but not frequently used short working points. The vehicles were turned round using traction batteries.
