Notes on Shanghai 6

by Zachary Jiang

Model SK561GF trolleybuses are the classic type and are by far the single most massively produced model that Shanghai Coach has ever built during the late 1980s and early 1990s. An estimated total of 800 to 900 units of such model were being built, and among them Shanghai held more than 600 of them, the rest went to other trolley systems through out the country. Nick named "box car" for having just a few seats
on the driver side so that standing capacity could be increased substantially (on the driver side, seats were only being installed through out the accordion section, and on top of 3 wheel wells), these coaches have
helped a lot to alleviate the flood like crowd during the most difficult time for the transit system of Shanghai. Today after a decade of fast pace infrastructure construction, combined with the privatization of the entire transit system, bus travel is a much more dignified experience in which being able to go somewhere is no longer the only choice of bus service, the desire for quality and comfort has led to the extinction of "box cars" (box cars also existed for motor buses) and emergence of newer generations of buses, and buses with air-conditioning.
