Notes on Dunedin

By Peter Rendall

In the NZ city of Dunedin there was a cable car route on Elgin Rd, which was used by trolleybuses on the Balaclava route - an aside - I was, I believe, the only person to miss the last trolleybus to Balaclava! It left the Octogon at 1230, and for once went to time. My connection was late & I chased the damn thing half way up Stuart St - another former steep cable car route.

Because Dunedin is quite hilly, their buses had 5 positions on the master controller - reverse|unused|off|forward|regenerative braking. Their electrical system was constructed in a manner that allowed the current to be fed back into the overhead. No other NZ system used this option.
