Notes on Chengdu

by Jeremy Lin

Chengdu is the capital of Szechuan province in Southwest part of China. Chengdu's trolleybus system was closed at the end of 1995.

The system originally had 5 trolleybus routes stretching to almost every corner of the town and they service level was considerably frequent. Two of the lines were replaced by diesel buses in 1992 or 1993 due to a major road works involving vast and deep excavations that happened to be along the busiest shopping belt of the city, where 3 trolleybus services had operated. One line was spared, although it was to be replaced at the time. The line survived a little bit longer. New overhead wires were installed along some small alleys giving way to avoid the road works.

The overhead for the affected routes wasn't brought down (except at the construction sites) immediately after the services halted. It was thought that the trolleybus services affected would resume when the road works was completed. In late 1994 the road work was completed and all other road traffic returned to normal, but the trolleybuses running through that area never resumed and the other 3 trolleybus routes had little time left as well. The entire overhead was removed by the end of 1995, which also marked the end of the city's trolleybus operation.
