by Zachary Jiang
Route 21: In Shanghai is that for a regular bus route with an overall length UNDER 13 km, the flat fare rate is set to ´1.00 Yuan per boarding, a regular bus route with an overall length OVER 13 km is called a regular long haul route, the flat fare rate is set to ´1.50 Yuan per boarding. Some other bus routes are classified as special routes, they adopt progressive fare structure according to distance of travel, so 13km criteria does matter to them. In Shanghai, all trolley routes are regular routes and thus charge flat fare rate, and because now the overall length of route 21 is 13.9 km, it becomes the only regular long haul trolley route, and charges ´1.50 Yuan.
Routes 22 and 25: Route 22 travels on Chang-yang Road, and route 25 travels on Ping-liang Road. Several years ago, the traffic pattern of these 2 roads were rearranged to become a pair of one way streets, with Chang-yang Road for westbound use, and Ping-liang Road for eastbound use, consequently both trolley routes were rerouted to meet the need of one way street couplet. As you can see from the map, Chang-yang Road and Ping-liang Road are really quite far apart from each other, the removal of bus service in opposite direction from each road created so much inconvenience for people living along both streets and depend on transit service. Finally the district government intervened by asking the transportation planning committee to set up bus only lanes in opposite direction of each one way street, allowing bus service to be restored.
