Brill 52. Here is MSRy
52, pioneer Brill TC in its original colors. (?) MSR had 9 of
these coaches, 51-59, numbered in the MSR motor coach series.
One of them was added after the original bunch were bought as
there were more riders than expected. Curiously, there never were
any busses numbered 42-50. These TCs debuted October 6, 1935 on
the 33 line, replacing streetcars and eliminating the need to
change ends enroute on the hairpin turn. These were the first
"modern" TCs to operate in California. The picture appears
to be taken on Stanyan St. opposite Golden Gate Park. Photographer
Unknown, submitted by Val Golding. The last Brill could have run
in 1953 when retired. There are conflicting reports on when the
Brills were scrapped. They were pulled from service by 1954. And
they were scrapped by 1958. Text edited by RCD.
...
The 33 has 619 feet of 12.3% grade which the Brills were able
to climb at
17mph. Their top speed was 37mph although the 33 never gave them
a chance to romp. Interestingly, at that early year they employed
trolley wheels. They remained on Muni property after consolidation
until 1958 when they were sold for scrap.

An unidentified Marmon-Herrington TC48, 790-849
series at a stop next to a PCC, at Powell on Market. The Marmon
is on either on route 5-McAllister (today 5-Fulton) or on route
21 Hayes. Only 1/4 or 1/3 of route 21 was assigned Marmons, Twin-Coaches
carried were primarily used. Twin Coaches were mainly used on
the 5 though some Marmon-Herringtons were assigned to it (Peter
Ehrlich). The larger building to the right is the Emporium. Note
the position of the poles of the trolley. At the time there was
only one set of trolley wires, separate from the streetcar wires.
Today there are two tracks of trolleybus wires and the streetcars
share on of the inner track wires. The wooden pole on the right
side of the picture is a mark of the construction period of BART.

An unidentified Marmon TC48, 740-789 series on
route 8 Market outbound to Castro at Church St., at Sanchez St.
The US Mint is in the background. It appears the trolley must
pull over to the far right (outbound) probably for subway construction
under Market St. or surface rail rebuilding. This part of the
subway is used by Muni Metro (J, K, L, M, N), and the surface
rail is now used by route F. Photo by Ms. R. Hill. 1975.

Marmon-Herrington 776 running a special trip on the opening of the F streetcar line, which replaced the 8 trolleybus line. The F line is wired from trolleybuses in the event of a break down of the 8 or the tunnel lines, which happens from time to time. It has been reported that the Flyer artics have an "F" roll sign for this substitution service, though Flyer 800s do not and still use the 8 roll sign. Photo by Wayne Duncan.
