Transform the SFU Experience
SFU launches ‘SFU Safe’ app this fall to enhance community access to campus safety and security resources
SFU is committed to fostering a campus culture where everyone feels connected, respected and safe. Despite our best efforts, we acknowledge that incidents affecting overall well-being, safety, and security may occur, and we are dedicated to ensuring our community feels supported especially during these moments.
Launched in October 2024, SFU Safe is the university’s official mobile safety application (app) developed by Safety and Risk Services (SRS). It aims to provide the community with new and accessible ways to connect with critical support services and to quickly find campus safety and security resources whenever they need it.
We spoke with Chief Safety and Risk Officer Galib Bhayani to understand how this new app supports SFU's strategy of transforming the campus experience through enhanced safety.
1. Campus safety and security resources at your fingertips
Many community members, especially newcomers and students, often feel uncertain about what to do, where to find help, or whom to contact during an emergency or critical event on campus. We understand that these situations can be overwhelming.
“SRS seeks to bridge this gap by providing the community with easy access to campus safety and security resources. The SFU Safe app streamlines this process by conveniently organizing all the information in one place, allowing you to quickly find exactly what you need and easily connect with Campus Public Safety and other support services directly from your mobile device, anywhere on campus,” shares Bhayani.
2. Get alerts right when you need it
SFU Safe will serve as a new communication channel for receiving notifications during emergencies or critical events on campus. These alerts are useful in situations like earthquakes or when you need to know if your classes are canceled due to extreme weather, which are common, especially in winter.
“It’s crucial for every member of our community to stay informed during critical moments, enabling them to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to ensure their safety,” says Bhayani.
“As we strive to enhance community safety, we encourage all others who are part of our extended community— UniverCity residents, campus visitors, day camp participants, and on-site construction and trades personnel —to download the app. This will allow them to receive real-time safety updates while on SFU premises,” adds Bhayani.
3. Fostering a culture of safety and care at SFU
Every member of our university community plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive campus environment. This begins with awareness, proactive understanding, preparation, and knowing how to respond in unforeseen situations.
“At SFU, safety is a shared responsibility, and we encourage all community members to actively participate in maintaining a safe campus. By staying informed and preparing for unexpected circumstances, we empower ourselves to protect our well-being and that of others. Embracing this new tool enhances our collective ability to create a safer campus environment for everyone,” concludes Bhayani.
