criteria
In order to set my criteria for the new location, I did some research on BC place stadium to see what made it such a desirable location. First of all, it was accessible my all means of transportation, especially skytrain. Secondly, it was in a prime location, right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It was not only a matter of going downtown to see a football game, but rather people made a day out of going to see a football game.
Criteria | Explanation |
Must have a slope gradient of less than 0.1 | I felt that it would be easier to build on an area that had a low slope. Considering cost, as it would require less money to excavate land, so it would definitely be cheaper to build on an area that was relatively flat. |
Must be 100m from a bus stop | The new area should be accessible by public. Many people do not like to drive downtown because of all the hassle with finding parking, and then dealing with traffic. BC place stadium was very accessible by public transit as it had a dedicated skytrain station that was within walking distance from it. Also, it makes it easier for those of us who have had a few too many drinks to get home, and it's much cheaper than taking a taxi. |
Must be 100 m from the Skytrain Line | |
Must be with 50 m of a major road | Road access is still important as some people still prefer taking their own car to the games. |
Must be on open space and undeveloped land | I felt that it would make the most sense to build on a completely vacant lot, this way there is no extra cost involved in tearing down old buildings. |
Criteria Not Used | Explanation |
Population | I felt that it was not necessary to include population into the criteria as a football game is very family oriented. One could make the argument that males ages 18-35 are the main target, true enough, but if people want to see a football game, they are willing to travel the few extra kilometres to see the game. For example, take a look at the this year's Grey Cup game in Toronto. Fans from all over across Canada went to see the game. |
Income | I decided to not include income because of the fact that Lions games are very cheap to attend, even for a poor student like myself. Tickets are reasonably priced, with tickets ranging from $20, for cheap seats, to $150, for premium seats. So taking the whole family would not mean taking out a second mortgage to pay for a family night out. |
