Staying Current: What makes Islamic Art Islamic?
For this session of Staying Current we explored the philosophical connection between Art and Islam.
About this event
For this session of Staying Current, we will be joined by special guests, Efemeral (poet) and Mustaali Raj (art director/graphic designer), as they answer the question: what makes Islamic art Islamic? Their conversation will explore their own contemporary art as well as the vast 1400 year tradition across the Muslim world and will consider the philosophical, geopolitical and of course artistic implications of the question.
The discussion intends to break barriers and stereotypes associated with traditional notions of Islamic Art, and to widen the scope of possibility for creative Islamic expressions. Our guests have established themselves as prominent local artists in their own right, offering a promising debate on the way Islamic Art could be conceived.
