BALL COURT

The ball court at Monte Alban was built during Period III, and is typical of Mesoamerican ball courts. Ball courts are found amongst nearly all the Mesoamerican cultures, and even into the American South West. Either individuals or teams played the game with a solid rubber ball. It is not known how pre-conquest participants played the game, but comparison can be made with conquest period observations. The ball game served both recreational and divinatory functions and was associated with the elite. Today the game is still played by indigenous peasants on the west coast of Mexico.
