Spindle Whorl

Spindle Whorl

Artifact # 96.2.23 This is hand-made.
Although this picture makes the spindle whorl appear very large it is in fact as small as a dime. The intricate decoration on this piece surely caused more eyestrain than staring at a computer ever did. Spindle whorls were extremely important for the manufacture of textiles. The Inka apparently knew this, as they exerted such effort in decorating this one. The textiles in the photo gallery demonstrate the skill possessed by the Inka weavers.
