Michele Whitlow
B.A. 2000
I am the drafting/GIS technician for Arcas Consulting Archeologists
Ltd. here in BC, but there are times when I do office work for the archaeologists when
they need help with production of reports for the bands and Archaeology Branch.
This work entails filling in CMT (Culturally Modified Tree) forms, CMT analysis, binding the reports,
etc.
The drafting technician is responsible for helping set drafting
policies, procedures and standards. The main duties of my job are to
provide computer aided drafting of maps, charts and graphs, as well as
scanning of photos, negatives and slides as needed. I also manage the
digital files and paper maps, and provide clients with cost estimates for
drafting work.
The GIS work I do consists mostly of providing
archaeological potential maps for certain areas of the province, but I also
digitize original data from archaeological field notes and use this data
with that of the clients to produce maps and digital files for the client.
I got this job as a result of my knowledge and experience in both
archaeology and GIS\Cartography. It is a job that demonstrates that there
is more to archaeology than field work, because field work is not everyone's
cup of tea. Arcas is not the only consulting company that has such a position.
