VIEWING ECON 331 ASSIGNMENT SOLUTIONS

Solutions to the assignments are presently available in two formats : plain text (.txt) and Maple V R4 work sheet (.mws). You should be able to view the plain text format in your browser without any trouble. The downside is that the output is pretty lousy (no graphics!) and the files are 'dead' - you will not be able to load them back into Maple to play with them. To view the work sheet files in your web browser (eg: Netscape Navigator) you may have to make some changes to your browser's configuration. If you do not have the stomach for this (it really isn't that difficult), you can save either the .mws files or the .txt files to your local hard drive. You will then be able to open these files with Maple V Release 4. By doing this the files will be 'live' - you will be able to execute commands and view graphics. You must have a copy of Maple V R4 on your local hard drive to do this.

Viewing Maple Work Sheets (.mws) in Your Browser

Since the work sheet versions of the assignment solutions were created with Maple V Release 4, you must have this version of Maple installed on the computer you are using. Release 3 will not read Release 4 work sheets! You have to configure your browser to use Maple as a helper application in order to view the work sheets. Here are some suggestions for the Netscape browser:

Netscape Navigator on an 'IBM' PC

Since the work sheets reside on a Unix host, Navigator should prompt you to specify a helper application when you attempt to view a work sheet (ie; click on a pointer/link to one of the assignments). If this fails, you can make the necessary changes yourself. Here are the specifics for Navigator 4.0 (beta):

Select Preferences from the Edit menu (Options menu in earlier versions)

Select General Preferences

Select Helpers from the General Preferences dialog box

Select Create New Type

In the new dialog box which appears, enter binary for mime type and maple for subtype

Enter mws for file extensions and enter the path to the executable file for Maple in the path field (use "browse" if you are not sure where your maple directory is).

Netscape Navigator or Mosaic on a Mac

The UCS Knowledge Base at Indiana University contains the necessary instructions for using Maple as a helper application on a Mac.
