Legacy Gift Honours Green Timbers Elementary: Diversity & Community Engagement
We are thrilled to announce that Green Timbers Elementary has been chosen as the recipient of the Faculty of Education Legacy Gift! This initiative, launched in June 2023 with Edmonds Community School as the inaugural recipient, continues its mission by providing Green Timbers with a valuable collection of books tailored to their needs. We would also like to acknowledge the support of SFU Alumni in this initiative.
Situated on the traditional, unceded, and shared territories of the Coast Salish peoples, Green Timbers stands as a vibrant symbol of cultural diversity. Its proximity to the Green Timbers Forest influences the essence of learning, both in and out of the classroom.
Moreover, Green Timbers is renowned for its dynamic initiatives that foster community engagement and personal development. Initiatives like Walking Wednesdays encourage the entire school to embark on a post-lunch walk, promoting unity, fitness, and overall well-being. The school also takes pride in offering the Punjabi Language Program, a unique offering in Surrey designed for students in grades 5 to 7.
Their robust leadership program empowers students to participate in local and global initiatives, ranging from assisting those in need at the Surrey Urban Mission to organizing fundraisers such as "WE Walk for Water" and participating in the CIBC "Run for the Cure" for childhood cancer research. Notably, they have recently led fundraising efforts for "Buddy Benches," fostering connections and friendships among children.
The school maintains strong connections with the community, including a valuable after-school program partnership with Friends of Simon.
Angela Flumerfelt, Program Coordinator, reflects on this enduring partnership: “Green Timbers and Friends of Simon have shared a longstanding collaboration since our inception in 2006! Over the years, our tutors have received unwavering support from the Green Timbers staff and community, enabling them to effectively assist their students in achieving academic success. The relationships forged between tutors, students, and staff have laid the foundation for our enduring partnership. We are delighted that this warm and welcoming school community, which has embraced us over the years, is being honoured in this special way. Congratulations to our friends at Green Timbers Elementary!”
