Dr. Bao’s doctoral thesis, “3D printed neuromorphic sensing sensors” explores the potential of a 3D-integrated neuromorphic system using multi-axis robotic 3D printing technology. Dr. Bao created a system that mimics the functions of biological nervous systems with the aim to understand how neuromorphic sensing systems in our bodies work. Each component of Dr. Bao’s system was fabricated using 3D printing from electrochemical sensors to synaptic transistors.

Dr. Bao’s research has applications in the fields of structural electronics, neuromorphic robotics and multi-axis 3D printing.

Dr. Bao’s contribution extends well beyond his written thesis. Along with many academic achievements and publications, Dr. Bao has several patents in the field of 3D printing and tubing systems.

External Examiner Dr. Xihua Wang from the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department of the University of Alberta describes Dr. Bao’s research as a “good stand-alone publication that will impact the field of bio-inspired devices and 3D printing.”

Of his time at SFU, Dr. Bao says “I am honoured to receive this award. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my senior supervisor, Dr. Woo Soo Kim, who has given me insightful comments and provided me with continuous support. I extremely enjoyed the wonderful time at SFU.”

Dr. Bao is working as a research associate in Dr. Woo Soo Kim’s lab at SFU and is preparing proposals to help a local manufacturer to demonstrate novel additive manufacturing in the construction industry.
